Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about using Study Buddy.

General

What is Study Buddy?
A flashcard study app that uses AI to help you create cards and spaced repetition (SM-2) to schedule reviews so you learn efficiently.
How do I create a deck?
Tap "+ Create a Deck" on the home screen, give it a name, then tap on the deck to add cards manually or generate them with AI from a topic, URL, or PDF.
Does the app work offline?
Yes. Study Buddy is a progressive web app. Once loaded, it works offline — you can study, create cards, and review without an internet connection. Cloud sync and AI generation require a connection.
Where can I find the Terms and Privacy Policy?
The Terms of Service and Privacy Policy are shown as a banner at the bottom of the app when you first visit. You can also view them directly: Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
Is my data private?
All data is stored in your browser's local storage by default. Cloud sync uses Supabase with name + PIN authentication. No email or personal information is required. See our Privacy Policy for details.
How do I contact support?
If you have questions, feedback, or need help, email me at michael_bui@live.com.au, or open an issue on our GitHub repository. I read every message — replies may take a while, depending on how busy things are.

Within a Deck

How do I generate cards with AI?
Open a deck, tap the generate panel, then choose a topic, paste a URL, or upload a PDF. The AI creates multiple choice flashcards based on the content. You can review and edit them before adding.
How does the accuracy verification work?
When you generate cards, the AI's output is automatically checked by a second AI pass for factual accuracy. Verified cards are marked clearly. If a card doesn't pass verification, you'll see a warning and can edit it before adding it to your deck.
How do I flag a card?
During a study session, tap the flag icon on any card to flag it. Flags are saved with the card, so they survive a reload. Flagged cards are collected on the results screen under Flagged Cards, and you can study just those cards with Study Flagged on the deck screen.

Studying

How does studying work?
You're shown a question with multiple choice answers. Select one, see if you're right, then rate how well you knew it. The app uses SM-2 spaced repetition to schedule your next review.
What are the rating levels?
Again (1) = didn't know, Hard (2) = got it with effort, Good (3) = knew it, Easy (4) = effortless. Higher ratings space out the next review further.
What study modes are available?
Study 5 and Study 30 — sessions of up to 5 or 30 cards; a deck with fewer cards offers exactly that many. Each shows cards due for review and new cards first, then tops up from the rest of the deck. Exam Mode — timed session with no feedback until the end. Study Flagged — a session of only the cards you flagged. Flagged cards are also collected on the results screen under Flagged Cards.
What is Exam Mode?
Exam Mode lets you set a time limit and study a set number of cards without seeing if you got them right until the end. Results are shown on the results screen with a score breakdown.

Data & Sync

Can I back up my data?
Yes. Go to Settings → Cloud Sync. Create a backup with a name and 4-digit PIN, or sign in to an existing backup. Your data is stored on Supabase and can be restored on any device.
If I clear sync, will I lose my data?
No. Clearing sync only removes the cloud connection (your name + PIN) from this device. All your decks, cards, and study progress are stored locally in your browser and remain intact. You can set up a new cloud backup anytime.
I see 'Cloud sync failed — your data is safe locally' — what does it mean?
This means the app couldn't reach the cloud backup server. Your flashcards are still saved on this device. Common causes: the cloud account may have been deleted, or there's a temporary network issue. Go to Settings → Cloud Sync and tap 'Clear Sync (no PIN needed)' to remove the stale connection, then set up a fresh backup.
Can I export my decks?
Yes. Go to Settings → Export Data to download a JSON file of all your decks and cards. You can import it back later or on another device via Settings → Import Data.
