What data we store
By default, your flashcards, decks, and study progress are stored entirely in your browser's local storage. No account is required, and no personal data is sent to our servers except when you use AI features, cloud sync, or payments.
Cloud sync
If you choose to use cloud backup, your deck data and a name + PIN identifier are stored on Supabase, a third-party database service. This data is encrypted in transit but stored as plain text on the server. You can delete your cloud data at any time from Settings → Cloud Sync → Delete Cloud Backup. Cloud sync is optional and not required to use the app.
AI flashcard generation
When you use the “Generate Cards” feature, your topic text, URL content, or uploaded PDF text is sent to Venice.ai, a private AI provider that does not retain or train on prompt data. Your content is used only to generate flashcards and is not stored by us. Venice.ai operates a privacy-first inference platform with no data retention policies for API usage.
URL and PDF extraction
When you provide a URL or upload a PDF for card generation, the content is extracted server-side and sent to the AI provider. We do not store the extracted content, the original file, or the URL beyond the duration of the request.
Payment processing
When you purchase Study Buddy Pro, payment is processed by Stripe. We do not receive or store your credit card details. Stripe collects your name, email address, and billing information to process the transaction; please refer to Stripe's privacy policy for how they handle it. We do store one thing ourselves: the email address Stripe sends with your purchase, alongside a record that the purchase was made. That is what lets your Pro access be restored on a new device, and it is not used for marketing or shared for any other purpose. If you would like that purchase record removed, contact us using the details below.
Cookies & tracking
Study Buddy does not use cookies, tracking scripts, or analytics services. We do not collect, share, or sell your personal data.
Data retention
Local data in your browser persists until you clear your browser's local storage for this site. Cloud backup data persists on Supabase until you delete it from Settings → Cloud Sync. Removing sync from a device stops syncing but leaves the cloud copy in place. AI generation data is not retained beyond the request. Payment data is handled by Stripe per their retention policies.
Third-party services
The app is hosted on Vercel. AI flashcard generation uses Venice.ai's API. Cloud sync uses Supabase. Payment processing uses Stripe. Please refer to their respective privacy policies for more information on how they handle data.
Your rights
Since most data is stored locally in your browser, you can clear it at any time by clearing your browser's local storage for this site. To delete cloud backup data, go to Settings → Cloud Sync and tap Delete Cloud Backup. For any other privacy-related requests, please contact us via the app's Settings screen or our GitHub repository.
